Gheghe (Gerold ‘Cadaf’ Meister) is someone I have held in high respect, for his thoughts and his consistency.
I met Gheghe in March 2020, right in the midst of the lockdown. The situation wasn't great for anyone, but it was probably even worse for him. For three months, we shared many surreal and meaningful moments. Lots of talks, but also music. During that time, Gheghe received four fines for not observing the decree that wanted him locked inside a house he didn't have.
Gheghe had a free, provocative, disobedient behavior. He was a friend to children and the pure-hearted, but an enemy to well-meaning adults with easy judgment.
One day, I showed him a photo I had taken of him with a dog. I said: 'Look, Gheghe the cynic!' His eyes lit up because he understood that I was referring to Diogenes, the ancient philosopher.
I saw Gheghe for the last time in March 2021, a week before he passed away. He was sitting on the same bench in San Giacomo where we used to meet during the lockdown.
This series of photographs is an attempt to remember him and the famous thinker I saw hidden within his figure.
Long live Gheghe.
